We all know that drinking water throughout the day is key. When I think of water, I strangely think of the Movie Zoolander and the AVEDA commercial in which he says, “moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty”. No? No one else? Anyway, we need to consume x amounts of water per day (depending on which study you read) to help stay hydrated and to survive – survival is key!
I was the worst when it came to drinking water and staying hydrated. I would drink 1 - 2 glasses of water per day, 5 - 6 lattes, and throw in a glass or two of wine. The way I saw it, I was consuming a lot of liquids and that meant I was staying hydrated.
Drinking water throughout the day brings many benefits. Amongst a handful of them, water helps to; flush out toxins, promote weight loss, increases energy (it helps me relieve fatigue near the end of my work day), and can improve your skins complexion -glow baby, glow.
Here are five ways that have helped me drink more water:
Keep a jug or carafe bedside – something as sleek as the IKEA $3.99 carafe with cork stopper. If you have enough space next to your bed, keep water readily available so that it’s the first thing on your mind when you wake up. Oh, and there for consumption!
Buy an awesome water bottle – the more you love your bottle the more often you’ll reach for it and drink from it! I’ve always been a fan of bkr water bottles. They come in three different sizes, a wide-range of colors and styles, and the small mouth feature prevents me from spilling on myself. I love using bkr bottles because they’re made of glass and come in a silicone sleeve. I’m not a fan of plastic water bottles (environmentally unfriendly) or stainless steel (they tend to hurt my teeth). Whatever your fancy, find water bottle that makes you want to drink from it!
Book a meeting with H2O – set a reminder on your phone to check in with yourself and how much water you’ve consumed. I prefer to do this around mid-day. If you've scheduled a gym session that evening, prepare to drink a glass of water pre and post exercise, and possibly during. Hot yoga? Definitely plan for serious water consumption during!
Make it fancy – I’m obsessed with lemon water. I love it not only for the taste but because I love the benefits of drinking lemon juice. Not only is it packed full of Vitamin C, but it also helps your digestive system (warm water with lemon is my go-to whenever I’m bloated). I also make lemon ice cubes and drop those in my water bottle when I’m off to the gym. If citrus isn’t your jam, consider tossing in fruit, mint, basil, cucumber etc. into a bottle with a built-in infuser (or just toss it into your glass). Go ahead, dress up your water – it won’t judge you for your creativity!
The Hydrator – a new love of mine. If you’re not a texture person, don’t do it. However, if you’re not bothered by activated chia in your beverage, follow along. I recently picked up the Greenhouse cookbook and in it they release the secrets of all their juice recipes (side note: my favorite place to buy pressed juice). I came across “Chia Seed Hydrator” and it’s a two in one beverage, which I love. The activated chia and lemon provide a handful of health benefits and the water to help activate the chia is why I’m drinking it in the first place. Also, the bubble tea-like texture is an added bonus for me. Packed full of protein, fibre, omega 3 and tons of other treats, this is just another way to encourage yourself to drink more water!
