Guilt-Free Comfort Food

Comfort food doesn’t have to be carb-loaded or gluttonous. I’m all about that 80/20 life. So when I’m thinking of comfort food I don’t necessarily associate it to that 20%. Recently, my boyfriend discovered a dish that has quickly become a go-to favorite. It meets all of my requirements; it has that comfort factor, it’s packed full of vitamins and protein, it has freshness, a punch of acidity, and a creaminess without the dairy. How is this possible? All my nutritionist friends say it is, and since I'm not a nutritionist by any stretch, I seek always seek advice from them. So, it’s been trial and error when discovering alternatives to dietary restrictions or lifestyle changes (sigh, lactose intolerant). To be honest, I began looking at it differently after discovering a few bloggers who made it seem less daunting and provided the research. Before that I didn’t even know where to begin.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be the first to admit that from time-to-time I’m inhaling McDonald’s at 2am on a Saturday night or poutine at On The Rocks (a karaoke gem in Toronto). However, I’m trying to find recipes that can provide the same satisfaction but better – and healthier! For example, Alex of FIT + FULL has a swap bible on her blog to help guide you through dietary alternatives while directing you to some incredibly nutritious and deliciously satisfying recipes!

So, when you’re on the hunt for something warm and delicious during these cold Winter months, try this mind blowing cauliflower hash. There are hundreds of variations of this recipe, each with their own substitutes and modifications, but I promise this one won’t disappoint:


2 Tbsp Of Organic Coconut Oil

½ 1 Large Cauliflower

1 Medium Onion (Finely Chopped)

2 Large Garlic Cloves (Pressed)

½ Lemon

1 Bunch Of Parsley (Chopped)

3 Tbsp Water

Free Range Eggs (# Based On Preference)

Salsa (Neal Brothers Organic Salsa –A Must)

Pepperoncini (Because, Why Not)

Seasoning: ¼ Tsp Paprika, ¼ Tsp Tumeric, ½ Tsp Himalayan Pink Salt + Black Pepper Corn


  1. Cut the cauliflower in half and de-stem. I prefer to throw the cauliflower in my Ninja food processer but you can also finely chop it if you don’t have a processer available;

  2. On medium to high heat, add the coconut oil to the wok and toss in both the cauliflower and the onion and spread it in the wok evenly. Let the cauliflower create a crust by letting it sit for a few minutes until slightly golden brown (I leave mine for about five minutes so that the bottom of the pot slightly burns - prefer the texture and crispiness some of the cauliflower gets);

3. Add your seasoning and water, and then give it a stir. Quickly throw a lid on top and let the cauliflower cook until it has softened (you want it to have more of a rice texture as opposed to mashed potatoes) – this should take about 4 to 5 minutes;

4. Now that the cauliflower has cooked, turn down the heat down to low and throw in your garlic while stirring it for a couple minutes;

5. Finally, add in half a lemon (juice only, of course) and continue to cook for a minute longer and then turn off the heat completely; and finally,

6. Throw some butter or oil into a pan and quickly fry up a couple eggs per plate. I tossed in lime and chili seasoning on my eggs and left them slightly runny (this is where that creaminess comes in).

Hurray, it’s time to plate! Add a few scoops of cauliflower onto your plate, slide on your two fried eggs, sprinkle the parsley on top, and place 1 - 2 tablespoon of salsa on the eggs. Oh, and don’t forget to grab two pepperoncini for garnish and consumption!

This dish is packed full of protein, high levels of Vitamin C and Vitamin K, anti-inflammatory benefits from the turmeric, and all sorts of other lovely minerals. Also, the parsley on top of those delicious eggs is what helps contribute toward maintaining a healthy gut, a direct benefit for your immune system! Beat it Winter flu! So, not only is this dish healthy but it’s completely satisfying and comforting. A must try!
